Equipment

  • Wide pan

Ingredients

For the patties:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • cup breadcrumbs
  • ½ small onion grated
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt (use half for table salt)
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 egg

For the gravy:

  • 10 ounces cremini mushrooms sliced
  • ¼ cup butter
  • ½ small onion finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 teaspoons beef base or bouillon
  • cups water (or beef broth)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce (or Knorr/Maggi seasoning)
  • Salt and pepper
  • Neutral oil

Instructions

  • Mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, grated onion, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and egg just until combined.
  • Divide into 6 and form thin patties. Press the center slightly thinner.
  • Heat oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Cook patties 2–3 minutes per side until browned. Set aside.
  • Mix beef base, warm water, soy sauce, and Worcestershire sauce.
  • In the same pan, cook mushrooms in one layer until browned. Add butter, onion, and garlic; cook until softened.
  • Sprinkle in flour and cook for a minute.
  • Pour in the broth mixture while stirring. Simmer until thickened. Season to taste.
  • Return patties and spoon the gravy over. Simmer until heated through. Serve with rice.

Notes

  • Ground beef: Use 85/15 for juicy patties. Ground pork also works.
  • Mushrooms: Cremini, white, or canned mushrooms.
  • Worcestershire: You can use Knorr or Maggi instead. Start small and adjust to taste.

Cooking Tips
  • Mix just until combined so the patties stay tender.
  • Press the middle thinner so the patties don’t puff up.
  • Cook patties in batches if needed so they brown well.
  • Let them cook without stirring first so they don’t turn watery.
