Filipino burger steak is made with juicy ground beef patties and a mushroom gravy, usually served over rice.
It's a simple, budget-friendly dish and a homemade version of the Jollibee favorite.
This recipe uses basic ingredients, cooks in one pan, and has plenty of gravy for the rice.

Ingredients You'll Need

Notes and Substitutions
- Ground beef: I like 85/15 ground beef because it keeps the patties juicy without being too greasy. You can also use ground pork.
- Mushrooms: I used cremini mushrooms, also called baby bella. White mushrooms or canned button mushrooms also work.
- Worcestershire sauce: This adds more flavor to the gravy. You can also use Knorr or Maggi liquid seasoning. Start with a small amount, then adjust to taste.
How to Make Burger Steak (Step-by-Step)
Step 1: Mix the patties
In a large bowl, combine:
- 1 pound ground beef
- ⅓ cup breadcrumbs
- ½ onion (grated)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt (use half for table salt)
- ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 egg
Mix just until combined.

Step 2: Form the patties
Divide the mixture into 6 portions and shape into thin patties.
Press the center slightly thinner so they cook evenly and don't puff up.

Step 3: Cook the patties
Heat a thin layer of oil in a pan over medium-high heat.
Add the patties and cook for 2-3 minutes per side until browned.
Transfer to a plate and set aside.

Step 4: Make the broth mixture
In a bowl, combine:
- 3 teaspoons beef base
- 2½ cups of warm water
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Mix until the beef base is dissolved.

Step 5: Cook the mushrooms
In the same pan, spread about 10 ounces mushrooms (sliced) in one layer over medium-high heat.
Let them cook without stirring until they start to brown and release their moisture.
Add ¼ cup butter, ½ small onion (finely chopped), and 2 garlic cloves (minced). Cook until softened.

Step 6: Add the flour
Sprinkle ¼ cup flour over the mushrooms and stir to coat. Cook for about a minute.

Step 7: Add the broth mixture
Pour in the broth mixture while stirring to prevent lumps.
Bring to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens.
Add some ground pepper and adjust to taste.

Step 8: Add the patties
Return the patties to the pan and spoon the gravy over them.
Simmer until heated through, then turn off the heat.

Serve your burger steak with steamed rice. Enjoy!

Cooking Tips
- Don't overmix: Mix just until combined so the patties stay tender.
- Flatten the center: Press the middle thinner so they don't puff up.
- Don't overcrowd: Cook patties in batches if needed so they brown well.
- Brown the mushrooms: Let them cook without stirring first so they don't turn watery.
